What help are we looking for at the moment?

As a group we are always on the look-out for an extra pair of hands.

If anything we could use help with:

  • Assistant quartermaster (QM) – to help keep our camping kit in good order;
  • Section assistants – to help with Beavers on meeting nights;
  • Fundraising helpers – to help swell our coffers. Just help out on any event;
  • Camp cook - A great way to help out is to offer to help out at camp. Camping with young children requires a lot of help. Our meals are simple to cook and even dads can peel spuds or stir soup :-0
These roles are not much more than simply assisting the Section Leader with the smooth running of the weekly meeting.

So what exactly might I be expected to do?

The assistant QM would help our current QM to monitor and repair equipment such as gas lights, tents etc. and order new equipment as required. We also need some help to sort out the old HQ in Hafield.

Assistant leaders/helpers might be asked to run the occasional game or particular activity. You might be asked to collect the weekly subs or even something simple like making the kids drinks. It is likely that you'll also have the opportunity contribute to the weekly programme and help decide what is happening and when.

The fundraising team meet once per month (in a pub ;-). Why not come along to a meeting, find out what is planned and see if you can help to support one of the events.

How much time will I need to commit?
Whatever you can give, anything from once per month (2 hours) would be great

What about training?
The Scout association has a very comprehensive training programme, essential when working with young people.
However, training is ‘role specific’, so the QM role would need only the basics for any adult working with children – child protection and Scouting principals.
As an Assistant leader further training may be required.

But you seem to be so well organised.
We do have a great team of leaders and helpers, many of who have been involved for years - that's because we enjoy it, it's fun and we have a great laugh together. But we need new blood. We are not a closed shop, anyone will be made to feel welcome. Most of us started out as parents of Beavers or Cubs with little or no knowledge, but we took on little tasks and were soon part of the 'family'.

What if I have more questions?
If you have any other queries whatsoever, no matter how trivial, PLEASE contact the Group Scout Leader via the contacts page, or talk to any leader on our meeting nights.

Helpers
In addition to Assistant Leaders, we are always on the look-out for occasional helpers. People to turn up, perhaps on a rota basis, and help out by offering an extra pair of hands - We can never have too much adult help.
